Witt Funeral Home Records
Not much is known about the history of this funeral home, which has been called by several names during its years of operation. The Witt Brothers opened for business in St. Louis City in 1886 and from 1894 to 1896 were listed in the city directory at at 616 South 7th Street. As Witt Bros. Livery and Undertaking Co. they showed up at 1216 St. 10th Street from 1901 through 1918 and at 809–811 Hickory Street from 1897 through 1918. It is not known if they had two separate locations or if it was one large business split between two addresses. The Witt Bros. Mortuary was located at 6409 Gravois Avenue from 1905 through 2000. That business had a chapel at 2929 S. Jefferson Avenue from 1916 through 1960. The records for the Witt/Witte Brothers were transferred to Gerber Chapel in Webster Groves, which closed in January 2017. StLGS obtained microfilmed copies from Gerber covering the years 1887 through 1986.
