Details About the StLGS Research Trip

Logistics: Hotel, Airfare, Meals

We are excited to announce this year’s annual research trip, which features a new hotel for our group. Located conveniently just a half block from a free TRAX (light rail) station, the Little America Hotel has beautifully updated rooms with coffee makers, microwave ovens, mini-refrigerators, and free Wi-Fi. On site are spacious lobby meeting spaces, several restaurants, bar service, two small stores, an indoor swimming pool, fitness center, sauna, and hot tub. The airport and the FamilySearch Library as well as restaurants and a full-service grocery store are easily accessible via the TRAX line. (Please note: Our former hotel next to the library is no longer open; hence, the change in our accommodations.)

Our research week is led by experienced genealogists and includes a pre-trip meeting during the summer before the actual trip, an electronic mailing list for participants so they can receive current information, seven nights at the Little America Hotel on South Main Street, six full days of research at the library, an orientation tour of the library and the downtown area, individual research consultations with the group leaders throughout the trip, and a welcome evening group meal at the hotel. StLGS members receive a discounted room rate for the week. (Extra nights at the group rate can be pre-arranged by the group leaders; be sure to let us know if you want to extend your trip.)

Airfare is NOT included. Feel free to contact society member, Nancy Mettes, a professional travel agent with Travel Leaders, if you need assistance with booking your flights. You can reach Nancy at nancy.mettes@travelleaders.com at 314-995-9420 or 800-999-6101.

Also NOT included are

  • Meals (except for the group dinner)
  • Incidental hotel costs, such as telephone charges, food delivery, or taxi service, and any extra days are the responsibility of the individual and must be settled prior to checkout.

If you are beginning your genealogy research, please contact the group leaders about whether you should consider the trip at this time. Their email is at the bottom of this page.

Genealogical Research

The FamilySearch Library is the world’s largest genealogical research facility. The library is a five-story building in downtown Salt Lake City across the street from Temple Square. Within its walls is a collection of thousands of books, hundreds of computers, digitized images from microfilms and CDs that may be copyright restricted and not online, and many trained staff and volunteer assistants. During our research week you will work on your own at the FSL, with the assistance of the StLGS tour leaders whenever you request help. For further information on the FSL visit the FSL website at familysearch.org.

What Else to do in Salt Lake City

When you need a break from researching, there is always so much to do in Salt Lake City. The Utah Jazz basketball team plays at the Delta Center, an easy ride on the TRAX from our hotel. There are concerts at Abravenel Symphony Hall, nearby shopping centers to browse, and, of course, the lovely buildings in Temple Square to view. Day and evening tours are available of nearby Park City. The Utah State Capitol is a short distance away from the library or there are sightseeing tours which include the surrounding area.

For more information, you can contact the group leaders at slctrip@stlgs.org.
