St. Louis pioneers recorded their vital events in many ways and this portion of Research In St. Louis shares some of these events with you.

The state of Missouri did not keep birth and death records until 1910. Local records varied before that date since registration was voluntary. Church baptismal records supplement birth records and often provide the mother’s maiden name.

Marriage contracts and records usually provide confirmation of the bride’s maiden name and the date of the wedding. Divorce records may serve the same purpose.

Death is part of life and a treasure trove of records is created when a person dies. Cemetery or crematory records provide personal and family information. Early burial permits substitute for death certificates. Funeral home, monument, and obituary records usually provide clues for descendants or other family members.
