Founded in 1849 by William G. Buchholz, this well-known family-run mortuary is still in business. The first of their locations was in the City of St. Louis, on West Florissant Avenue near Riverview Boulevard. Today, they operate in North St. Louis County in Florissant.

In 2003, the family obtained the records from the Mathias “Math” Hermann and Sons Funeral Home, which had been at 1645 Redman Road in Spanish Lake. Founded in 1869 in St. Louis City, the company was one of the oldest funeral homes in St. Louis.

In 2019, StLGS received permission from the Buchholz family to copy and digitize their records. Later that year, the society was awarded a Richard S. Brownlee Grant from the State Historical Society of Missouri to begin scanning and indexing the Buchholz record books. Because of the sheer volume of pages, a decision was made initially to concentrate on just one decade. With additional volunteer effort we have added files, so the index now extends from 1949 through 1970. As time and volunteer effort permit, additional years will be added.

The information in these indexed records may include the dates of birth and death, funeral and cemetery information, parents’ names, occupations, notes for obituaries, and more. Please note: Because of copyright restrictions, we have had to omit the actual obituaries on pages where they appear.
