Other than thirteen pre-1850 records, the records cover 1850–1908.

The records for juveniles in the City of St. Louis were recorded in several volumes. Only one of these, volume 2, from 30 April 1907–30 September 1908, has been microfilmed and included in this index. The City of St. Louis also kept separate registers for deaths outside of the city from 1875–1908. These were St. Louis residents who died elsewhere and might have been returned to the city for burial. These deaths were entered in four volumes. Volume 2 (7 December 1878–2 October 1895 and volume 4 (1 March 1905–31 December 1908) are included in this index. The other two volumes were not microfilmed and are unavailable at this time.

The records in this database are from death register

  • volumes A–L (1850–1865)
  • volumes 1–50 (1866–1907)
  • volumes 52 and 53 (1908)
  • juvenile deaths, volume 2 (1907–1908)
  • deaths outside the city, volume 2 (1878–1895)
  • deaths outside the city, volume 4 (1905–1908)
  • St. Louis County deaths, volume 1 (1883–1910)

Be aware of the following gaps in death records:

• 11 February 1860–9 May 1860: no known records were kept during this transition period from deaths recorded by cemeteries to deaths reported by doctors/undertakers.
• 26 February 1907–29 February 1908: there is one death register, (volume 51), which was missed on both microfilmings. It does exist at St. Louis City Hall, but is not available to the general   public.
• 26 March 1904–31 March 1907 and 1 October 1908–30 December 1908: volumes 1 and 3 of the Juvenile Death Records have not been microfilmed. The originals are at City Hall.
• 1 July 1875–7 December 1875 and 1 January 1896–28 February 1905: deaths outside the city, volumes 1 and 3, have not been microfilmed. The originals are at City Hall.

If a person might have died in St. Louis County between 1876–1883, check in St. Louis City anyway. The hospitals and most of the commerce were still concentrated in the City, and you may find the death record there.

Cemeteries listed in this index are those existing at the time of burial. Some of the cemeteries still exist; others are closed, relocated, or renamed. Some names in the records are vague, such as “Baptist,” “German Protestant,” or “Catholic.” There are some cemeteries with duplicate names, such as two Mt. Olives and multiple St. John’s and St. Peter’s. Cemeteries are noted herein as they are listed in the registers. You may need to investigate further for more specific information on a cemetery. The term “infant” has been used to denote a child of less than one year. If there is a parent’s name, it will appear in the “Notes” field. Some individuals were originally buried in one location and then removed to another. In those cases, volunteers just captured the final location. You will want to look at the original record for information on the first burial.
