The St. Louis Genealogical Society maintains its research library in the Emerson History and Genealogy Center of the St. Louis County Library.

The History and Genealogy Center, located on the second floor of the Clark Family Branch, has extensive holdings from throughout the world. Our StLGS Collection, which is housed in the H&G center, consists of approximately 30,000 items, including books, journals, maps, and CDs. Although St. Louis and Missouri are important parts of the holdings, there are also numerous resources for all U.S. states, many European countries, and religious records for all denominations.

Circulation

The collection is largely a reference collection; most items in the collection do not circulate. Where duplicate copies exist, the duplicate may circulate. See the library catalog, which you can access on the library’s website, for details.

Using the H&G Center

Almost all of the materials in the H&G Center are on open shelves. There are computers and some microfilm machines available for patrons. There is ample space for researchers to plug in their own laptops and internet/Wi-Fi is available for everyone. The library has many digital databases available both in the library and at home for those with a St. Louis County Library library card. In addition, the center has a Memory Lab, where you can digitize old media, a set of oral history kits that can be used at home, and scanning kits for patrons to borrow.
