Missouri Historical Society

The Missouri Historical Society Library has a treasure trove of information on St. Louis history and the people who formed the area. This facility has both a library and archives. On your first visit, request a short tour of the facility. The staff will point out the various card catalogs and information in the reading room.

In the reading room, researchers can find a complete set of City and County directories. They have some early St. Louis newspapers on microfilm and an extensive collection of St. Louis maps. There is an extensive military collection including biographies of recruits who served from St. Louis City and County in World War I.

The holdings include colonial records from the French and Spanish governments in the district of St. Louis, 1766–1804; tax records, and St. Louis County voter registration books 1924–1936. The collection also includes business records from the fur trading era to the twentieth century. Of course they have an abundance of information on Lewis & Clark and the 1904 World’s Fair.
