Catholic Baptisms in St. Louis, 1765–1840
In 1982, a committee of StLGS volunteers published a book of previously unpublished baptisms from what was then the Church of St. Louis, King of France (now a basilica, commonly known as the Old Cathedral), the church of Sts. Mary and Joseph in Carondelet, and St. Ferdinand de Florissant. The book was revised in 1998, and it is from this revision that the following information has been taken.
The original book was divided into four sections, three of which combine records from the Old Cathedral and Sts. Mary and Joseph. The fourth is of St. Ferdinand alone. During the past few years, a new cadre of StLGS volunteers has re-indexed the book, correcting as many errors as possible. Many of the original records were in French, so translation mistakes are possible. We encourage you to look at the actual book, which has been digitized and is on this website and linked below. We also encourage you to locate the original records, copies of which are available on microfilm in the Emerson History and Genealogy Center at St. Louis County Clark Family Branch and at the Family History Library.
