Patrick Joseph Quigley (1849–1910) and Helen “Nellie” Agnes Shaw (1852–1919)

Patrick Joseph Quigley was born on 17 January 1849 in Ireland, probably in County Cork. His father was James Quigley; however, his mother’s name is unknown. By 1872, Patrick had married Helen “Nellie” Agnes Shaw. The 1900 census indicates that Patrick immigrated to the United States in 1864. The 1866 and 1867 St. Louis city directories list someone named Patrick Quigley as a car man and as a driver; the 1870 directory lists a carriage driver named Patrick Quigley, but it is uncertain whether this is the correct Patrick Quigley. In 1880, Patrick was living with his wife and children on Chouteau Avenue and was working as a railroad conductor. By 1889, he was a grocer, and he was still a grocer in 1900, living at 2745 Chouteau Avenue. Patrick died on 24 January 1910 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery.

Helen “Nellie” Shaw Quigley apparently shared a birthday with her husband. She was born on 17 January 1852 in England. Her father was Charles Shaw; her mother’s name is unknown. She immigrated to the United States in 1857. The 1880 census lists Nellie as a store keeper. The 1902 and 1903 city directories list her as a grocer, but they also list her and Joseph P. Quigley as having a shoe store called “N. A. Quigley & Son” at 2813 Chouteau. In 1910, she lived at 2815-A Arsenal Street, and at the time of her death she was living at 2837-A Gasconade. She died on 2 January 1919 at St. Anthony’s Hospital and was buried in Calvary Cemetery.

This couple had eleven children, with one daughter who died in infancy, all born in St. Louis. Their ten surviving children were as follows:

• • James Charles Quigley was born on 4 November 1872 and died on 20 May 1946. James married Margaret J. O’Donnell.
  • Silas John Quigley was born on 9 August 1874 and died on 16 May 1944. Silas married Mary Ellen Thomson.
  • Joseph Patrick Quigley was born on 15 August 1876 and died in June 1957. Joseph married Jennie A. Hood. This family lived in Illinois.
  • Edward Aloysius Quigley was born on 28 September 1878 and died on 7 December 1911. Edward married Maggie Hornberger.
  • George Allen Quigley was born on 8 April 1881 and died on 1 August 1946. George married Millie Hornberger. (Millie and her sister Maggie, mentioned above, both had worked in the Quigley household.)
  • Nellie A. Quigley was born on 15 September 1884 and died on 7 February 1947. Nellie married Paul Daniel Murray.
  • Mary Corrine Quigley, called Corrine, was born on 8 February 1887 and died in July 1949. She married Michael P. Fox and lived in Boulder, Colorado.
  • Elizabeth “Lizzie” L. Quigley was born on 28 August 1889 and died on 26 February 1919. Elizabeth married William J. Foley.
  • Francis Harold Quigley (a.k.a. Harold Francis) was born on 29 January 1892 and died on 22 April 1924. Francis married Lydia Brinker.
  • Charles Jacob Quigley was born on 11 October 1893 and died on 27 January 1953. Charles married Ida Viola Blauner.
