Dolores Ann Scott, 1935–2018

Dolores Ann Scott was the first of two children born to Wylie Scott and Marion (Spencer) Scott, who preceded her in death. She was born on 8 July 1935 in St. Louis City, Missouri.

Dolores was educated in the St. Louis Public School system, graduating from Charles Sumner High School in June 1953. While attending high school, Dolores was a member of the Maroon and White Boosters’ Club, the Pan American Club, and the staff of the school newspaper, The Cub. Dolores wanted to become a teacher.

On 31 October 1954, Dolores married Robert Curtis Hudson (1934–1981) at her parents’ home in the City of St. Louis. To their union, two sons were born, one of whom is deceased.

On Sunday, 16 May 1971, Dolores, a day care administrator, her close friend, and a sister-in-law, Frencella Hudson Evans (1920–2011), hosted an open house for the Learning Tree Day Nursery located at 2800 North Taylor Avenue in St. Louis. The open house program included piano selections and songs by Dolores’s close friend’s daughters, an oration given by Dolores, and a tour of the building.

The Learning Tree Day Nursery remained operative through the late-2000s and became a thriving business that expanded to meet many needs of the community, including those of senior citizens and the very young. It was last located at 4430 Labadie Avenue and became the Learning Tree Intergenerational Center. Dolores was happiest when she interacted with children. She received many community service awards during her career. She retired from the Learning Tree in 2005 after serving the community for thirty-four years.

Dolores loved traveling. Her favorite mode of transportation was by train, no matter how long it took to get to her destination. She enjoyed traveling on trains so much that when her grandchildren were younger, she treated each to a destination of their choice as long as it was on the train. Her favorite cities to visit were Dallas, Texas; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dolores expired on 24 April 2018. A funeral service was held at New Sunny Mount Missionary Baptist Church on 30 April 2018. She was entombed in the mausoleum near her son, Renard Everette Hudson at St. Peter’s Cemetery in St. Louis County. One son and daughter-in-law, who served as her care provider, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren survive her.
