Clarence Homer Mason, 1877–1933

Clarence Homer Mason was born 28 October 1877 in San Saba, San Saba County, Texas, to Charles Anderson Mason, (1850ꟷ1906), and Laura Ann Kirkpatrick Mason, (1859ꟷ1919). Raised in Vernon, Wilbarger County, Texas, he completed high school there in 1895. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on 13 May 1898 and was discharged on 14 November 1898, having served as a private in Troop G, First Texas Volunteer Cavalry in the Spanish-American War. He was paid $8.32 as compensation for services from the date of assembly to the date he was mustered into the United States service for the war with Spain. He still lived at home with his parents in Vernon in 1900 and worked as a grocery salesman while pursuing further education. He purchased a city lot in Vernon on 1 June 1901. He entered Eastman Business College, Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1902, graduating in 1903. On 6 Jun 1903, he married Agnes Blanche Travis, (1876ꟷ1953), in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. Agnes was the daughter of Reverend Charles H. Travis, (1838-1896), and Emily Ostrander Potter Travis, (1845ꟷ1929), of Schoharie and Ulster Counties, New York. Shortly after his marriage, Clarence moved to St. Louis and began working, first for John S. Blake and Brother Realty Company and then quickly moving to Holbrook-Blackwelder Real Estate Trust Company learning the real estate trade. In 1906, he went into partnership with Martin F. Trepp forming the Mason-Trepp Real Estate Company and finally in business as C. Homer Mason Realty Company. In 1910, his mother and five youngest siblings moved to St. Louis to be close to Clarence and his family. All of those siblings married in St. Louis and the four sisters settled here. His siblings were Myrtle Elizabeth Mason, (1885ꟷ1935), married Morley Frank Hartzell; Alice Ivy Mason, (1890ꟷ1961), married Robert Roy Peek; Charles Kirkpatrick Mason, (1893ꟷ1918); Wilmina Katherine Mason, (1895ꟷ1979), married Clayton Hershey Young; and Ruby Lucille Mason, (1897ꟷ1974), married Franklin Hershey Young, Clarence died on 6 March 1933 at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital, Jefferson Barracks, Lemay, St. Louis County, of a cerebral hemorrhage. He is buried in Jefferson Barracks Cemetery. He was a member of the Real Estate Exchange and Occidental Lodge No. 163, A.F. & A.M. He was a Republican and a Methodist. Clarence and Blanche were the parents of two children: Travis Anderson Mason, (1911ꟷ1970), and Emily Louise Mason McGee, (1914ꟷ?). Agnes Blanche Mason died and is buried in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida.
