Cookbook: Lutheran Orphans’ Home Ladies Aid Society
The index below consists of the names of women and some businesses who contributed to The Bride’s Cookbook, published in 1935 by the Lutheran Orphans’ Home Ladies’ Aid Society. A Xeroxed copy of the original, which is located at the Concordia Historical Society, was donated to StLGS by Nancy Besemer, who said that the orphanage was in Des Peres where the city hall is currently located (12325 Manchester Road).
The Lutheran Orphans’ Home opened in Des Peres in 1868 and a series of three buildings were built on the same location as one by one they proved too small for the increasing population of children. The building on the site now was erected in 1936, after the previous structure, one built in 1893, burnt down. The orphanage remained open until 1966, when the need for its services had declined dramatically. The city of Des Peres purchased the property and converted the building into its city hall in 1973.
This copy is missing two pages (28 and 29). We have eliminated recipes donated anonymously and advertisements labeled “Compliments of a friend” with no names included.
