Karl August Bueltmann, 1874–1919

Karl August Bueltmann, who went by his middle name, was the youngest son of Friedrich Wilhelm Bueltmann and Anna Caroline Wilhelmina (Pankoker) Bueltmann. August was born on 10 November 1874 at 2615 St. Louis Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Bueltmann house sat on property which also housed the coal and ice business founded by his father, Friedrich, a German immigrant. August began working at a very young age in the business, alongside his brother Charles and his mother, Anna Bueltmann. After they gave up the business, August worked for Udell Predock Furniture Company as an elevator operator, at International Shoe Company, and at Butler Brothers.

On 2 September 1902, in Clayton, St. Louis County, Missouri, August married Rosa Monika Miller (6 June 1873–19 May 1911) of Irving, Illinois. They were married by Henry B. Albers, Judge of the First District of St. Louis County, probably because August was Protestant and Rosie was Catholic. Their son, August John Gerard Bueltmann, was born on 14 August 1906 at their home, still at 2615 St. Louis Avenue in the City of St. Louis. By 1910, August, Rosie, and Gus were living at 2627 Sullivan Avenue in St. Louis, and August was working as a teamster at a table factory.

After Rosie died in childbirth on 19 May 1911, August and his son Gus first moved to his older brother Charles Bueltmann’s home at 1425 Clinton Avenue in St. Louis, where his mother, Anna, also lived. A financial disagreement between Anna and Charles resulted in another move for Anna, August, and Gus back to the 2615 St. Louis Avenue address.

August was very interested in education and dreamed of his son’s attendance at Yeatman High School. Although August lived to see his son enter Yeatman High in September 1919, he died in December 1919 from kidney and heart problems., August is buried in St. John’s Cemetery, Bellefontaine Neighbors, St. Louis County.
