Eugène Charles Dupré, 1813–1874
Eugène Charles Dupré was born in Paris, France, to Charles François Dupré and Marie Constance (Aubry) Dupré. In 1833, Eugène emigrated to St. Louis, Missouri, where on 3 July 1837 at the King of France Cathedral in St. Louis, he married Marie Louise “Manette” Papin, who was born in St. Louis on 5 April 1817 to Hypolite Papin and Joséphine (Loisel) Papin. Marie Louise died on 11 June 1849 during a cholera epidemic.
Eugène and Louise were the parents of two children:
-
- Alphonse Huberg, born 3 May 1838 in St. Louis. After the death of his mother in 1849, Alphonse became a ward of his uncle Joseph Loisel Papin. During the Civil War, he joined the Confederate army. He was arrested by the federal authorities in 1862 and imprisoned at Alton, Illinois, before “escaping in company with Major Wyman of St. Louis.” He rejoined the Confederate army, serving throughout the war, and was killed in 1864 at one of the last battles.
- Minnie, who never married.
Before 1850, Eugène moved to California and eventually took a second wife named Emma [unk] (~1837–1864). She died on 20 December 1864 in San Francisco.
Eugène and Emma were the parents of four children:
-
- Emma C., 1853–1921, who married Harry P. Moreal (1854–1902)
- Eugene, 1855–1894, who married Loretta [unk] (1854–1884)
- Ada, 1856–[unk]
- Josephine, 1858–[unk]
When he lived in St. Louis, Eugène Dupré opened a ladies’ Parisian cloak establishment and later established the first “electrotyping enterprise.” In 1838, he published the Atlas of the City and County of St. Louis, for which he was the lithographer. (You can see this atlas, now fully indexed on our website.)
According to city directories, while living in San Francisco, Eugène worked as a notary public and attorney. Eugène died on 22 February 1874 in San Francisco. Both Emma and Eugène were buried originally in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, but between 1940 and 1941, they were among the 39,000 graves moved to Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma, San Mateo County, California.
