Spanish land grants were made to many Americans who were moving west seeking new opportunities in the expanding frontier. Many pioneers received land grants based on family size.

Neither the French nor Spanish governments ever sold any portion of the Royal Domain in Upper Louisiana; they gave it away in the form of grants.

The index provides the name of the claimant, survey number, date, and grantor (if any). Early maps of St. Louis County, including the 1838 Atlas of the City and County of St. Louis, by Congressional Townships, indicate most of these grants.

This information was published in the 1974 St. Louis Genealogical Society Quarterly, volume 7, number 2, pages 31–32
