History

Established in 1895; closed in 2013

In the early 1890s, families began building homes in the new Rose Hill area of St. Louis. Othniel Aid Bartholomew, pastor of Mount Cabanne Church, saw the need to establish a Disciples of Christ Christian Church in this new section of the city. In 1895, he purchased property at the southwest corner of Plymouth and Hamilton Avenues to establish a new church. Because of confusion with another West End group, the congregation voted to change their name to Hamilton Avenue Christian Church in 1903. The growing congregation quickly exceeded the capacity of their small chapel and acquired property for a new church on the northeast corner of Hamilton and Julian Avenues, just one block north.

In 1960, the congregation realized that they could no longer serve the changing community around their church. They voted to move to the Creve Coeur area in west St. Louis County. They built a modern church on Old Olive Street Road in 1962 where they worshiped for fifty-one years. Faced with financial difficulties and a declining membership, the church closed in 2013 ending their 118-year heritage. A developer began acquiring property in the area to erect a major residential and business complex. The church officers sold the property to the developer who razed the building. The congregation donated the proceeds from the sale to several charities that the members had previously supported.
