Tax records are not as plentiful in St. Louis and Missouri in general as compared to Kentucky and Virginia. However, the available records can be very helpful to genealogists.

Missouri Historical Society Library has a tax list collection, which includes records from 1816 to 1841. The 1817–1819 Missouri tax list consists primarily of St. Louis residents. St. Louis City real estate taxes are included with assessor records dating from 1818 to 1844. The City of St. Louis had special books for alleys, streets, and sewer taxes dating from 1854 to 1904. There are tax lists of city tenants dating 1947 to 1950. Some of these tax records are available at the Family History Library.

Before using tax books, determine the location of the residences and the correct municipality.
