The St. Louis Genealogical Society maintains its research library in the History and Genealogy Department of the St. Louis County Library.

Due to ongoing construction of a new building, the History & Genealogy Department, is temporarily located at the Daniel Boone branch of the library, 300 Clarkson Road, Ellisville, Missouri. (Here is a link to a Google map showing the library’s location.) The H & G Department has extensive holdings of more than 90,000 items, although until the new library is completed, some of the collection is currently in storage. Our StLGS Collection consists of approximately 20,000 items, including books, journals, maps, and CDs.

The new library, called the Clark Family branch, will be located at the old Headquarters site on Lindbergh Boulevard and will be the home of the History & Genealogy Department when it reopens, probably sometime in 2024.

We also have a smaller collection of books, mostly concentrated on Missouri, in our office reference room.

Circulation

The research library collection at the library is largely a reference collection; most items in the collection do not circulate. Where duplicate copies exist, the duplicates may circulate. See the library catalog for details.

Accessibility

Because of limited space, most of the materials in the History & Genealogy Department are off site or available by request only. A limited amount of Missouri and Illinois material is on open shelves in the temporary location. More information is on the department’s website.

Food and drinks are not allowed in the History and Genealogy Department.

Microfilm and Internet

At this time, there are limited microfilm machines and computers available for patron use in the History & Genealogy Department. Staff members, all experienced genealogists, are also available to help researchers.
