The St. Louis Genealogical Society maintains its research library in the History and Genealogy Department of the St. Louis County Library Headquarters.

The History and Genealogy Department, located on tier five of the headquarters branch of the library, has extensive holdings of more than 80,000 items. Our StLGS Collection consists of approximately 20,000 items, including books, journals, maps, and CDs.

Circulation

The collection is largely a reference collection; most items in the collection do not circulate. Where duplicate copies exist, the duplicate may circulate. See the library catalog for details.

Accessibility

Most of the materials in the Special Collections Department are on open shelves. A notable exception to this is that all Family History books and most genealogical periodicals are in closed stacks and must be requested.

To protect the collection, purses, briefcases, and any type of closed containers may not be brought into the department. Free lockers are available to store these materials on tier four.

Microfilm and Internet

There are many microfilm machines available for patron viewing of microfilm records. Also, there are several computers in the department with Internet access, including subscriptions to Ancestry Library Edition and ProQuest’s HeritageQuest Online databases.
